Bariatric sleeve surgery, also known as Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy (VSG) or Gastric Sleeve Resection, is a restrictive form of weight loss surgery that helps patients lose weight by reducing the size of the stomach and thereby permanently reducing the patients’ capacity to eat.

Overview of Gastric Sleeve Surgery

  • Costs associated with bariatric sleeve surgery trip to India. Under this surgical procedure, a major part of the stomach, between 65-80% is removed, leaving only a tube shaped small part of the stomach with very limited capacity to store food.
  • Included in the removed part is also that part of stomach that is responsible for production of ghrelin, a hormone chiefly responsible for hunger pangs.
The gastric sleeve surgery brings about weight loss in two ways:
  • Reduced size of the stomach greatly reduces a person’s capacity to eat at a particular time, as stomach can store very less amount of food and the patient feels full quickly.
  • Since ghrelin producing part of the stomach is removed, signals of hunger sensations sent to the brain are greatly reduced and patient feels hungry less often.
Gastric sleeve surgery is usually recommended to patients with a BMI of 35 or above. Patients with lower BMI but suffering from other obesity related diseases such as diabetes and blood pressure may also be recommended for gastric sleeve surgery.

India’s Leading Sleeve Gastrectomy Surgeon Interview

Posted by: Adam on March 25th, 2011no responses.

Bariatric surgeon from India talks about sleeve gastrectomy – weight loss and required hospital stay.

According to the surgeon, sleeve gastrectomy, commonly known as vertical sleeve, was earlier used in BPD treatment and other procedures. Now it is used as a single stage procedure without any major complications. He also observed a remarkable control of diabetes and hypertension, in addition to dramatic weight loss in people, who underwent gastric sleeve surgery or vertical gastroplasty.

In the above shown video, Indian obesity surgeon discusses the estimated fat loss and stay required in the hospital after gastric sleeve surgery. Below is the video narration.

START

“Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is something which is gaining popularity. It is a procedure which is now being used as a single stage procedure. It is something which is extremely popular in India. If we look at the complete scenario of bariatric surgery in our country, we would find that of all the surgeries being done, 60% would be sleeves, 30% would be bypasses and about 10% would be bands. That’s almost in all centers including ours.

Now, Sleeve to start with was a procedure which was used as a first stage for a BPD or any other procedure, especially in super obese so that once they scale down to a normal, slightly lower BMI, then we can do a definite procedure but over a period of time it has been that they not just help in the patient losing weight but also help in the resolution of metabolic syndromes like diabetes, hypertension or any other metabolic problems that they have. So as a result now we are offering sleeve as a single stage procedure.

About the choice of the patients who are offered these procedures, we leave it to the patients again. We tell them the merits and demerits of all the three procedures and then probably decide what is the procedure which would be best suited for this particular patient. Our results have been very encouraging.

We have been doing sleeves as a single stage procedure for almost more than 4 years now and the excess weight loss that we have seen in our series had gone up to about 70% initial in the first year but subsequently its ranging between 50-60% weight loss over a period of four years. There has been about 70-80% of resolution of diabetes and hypertension in these patients.

We primarily don’t see any complications associated with sleeve and the patient get discharged from the hospital in about 4-5 days and can go back to their own countries in about 8-10 days time.

We have been getting patients from all over the world and primarily we have been getting patients from lot of middle east countries and Africa but we also get patients from the UK, the US and since the hospital and tertiary care center that we have is offering the best of facilities with multispecialty workup for these patients and having almost all the branches and a very critical care with a very well balanced and large ICU that we have.

So as a result these patients are the bariatric patients especially, we tackle the super obese or with the metabolic problems, then these patients require a multidisciplinary approach which we can offer to them. And as a result these patients are very satisfied once they go off from here and we are able to manage most patients in our center.

Apart from doing bariatric surgeries we are also doing routine laparoscopic procedures, gall bladders, appendix, all kinds of hernia. We follow very simple principle in our institute that all patients having hernia are fit to be done by laparoscopy, so these are the routine procedure that we do.

Apart from that we are doing advanced GI work as well like fundoplications like cysts. We are doing GI malignancies also including gastric cancers, colorectal cancers and pancreatic cancers. So we are doing that as well and apart from that we are also going into robotic GI oncology. I have done cases and the patients have been doing very well.”

END

Sleeve Gastrectomy is gaining popularity among bariatric surgeries. Surgeon claims that of all the weight loss surgeries performed by him, 60% are sleeves. He suggests 4-5 days of hospital stay for the surgery and also mentions that within 8-10 days one can return home.

The surgeon specializes in tackling super obese patients with metabolic problems, GI malignancies, appendix and all kinds of hernia. Apart from gastric sleeve surgery, he has been also performing gastric bypass, lap band surgery and stomach plication. People from many countries like Africa, UK, US and Middle-East have been treated by the surgeon.

With attractions like affordable cost of gastric sleeve surgery in India, internationally trained surgeons and high-technology hospitals, people from different countries across the world visit here for their fat loss surgery.

India’s Bariatric Surgeon Talks Sleeve Gastrectomy & Gastric Bypass

Posted by: Adam on February 24th, 2011no responses.

Weight loss surgeon from India explains the difference between sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery.

Gastric bypass surgery, commonly known as roux-en-y gastric bypass, involves refashioning the size of the stomach. It limits the food intake and the individual feels full after eating a small meal. It is a malabsorptive and an irreversible procedure.

Sleeve Gastrectomy, also known as gastric sleeve surgery, involves the surgical removal of a large part of the stomach and involves no food malabsorption.

The bariatric surgeon in above shown weight loss video talks about the difference between the two. Following is the video narration.

START

“We are doing all three kinds of mostly done procedures – Gastric Banding, Sleeve Gastrectomy and the Gastric Bypasses.

Selection for a particular Bariatric Procedure: It basically depends on the BMI. Like the patients who have got, I mean BMI more than 45, then those patients I would rather prefer for gastric bypass procedures. But the sleeve Gastrectomy is also another very good option of the BMI is more than 40.

Difference between Sleeve Gastrectomy & Gastric Bypass: Sleeve Gastrectomy is basically a restrictive procedure. In this, we just decrease the capacity of stomach. In Gastric Bypass surgery, we reduce the capacity of stomach as well as we add a mal absorptive procedure so that there is malabsorption of food we are taking in. Less nutrients are being absorbed so that less calories goes into the body.

Success rates of bariatric surgeries: I have been associated with Sleeve Gastrectomy. I have not done it myself but I have been associated with sleeve gastrectomies. Sleeve Gastrectomy is the safest procedure. Gastric Bypass is a more complicated procedure as compared to sleeve Gastrectomy and carries more mortality and morbidity than sleeve Gastrectomy.

But the overall mortality is very less with bariatric procedure whether it is gastric banding, sleeve Gastrectomy or gastric bypass. The complication rate and mortality is slightly more in gastric bypass procedures as compared to sleeve Gastrectomy.”

END

According to the surgeon, BMI of a person helps a lot in settling onto the type of bariatric surgery for an individual. He also quotes an example saying that  for people with BMI over 45, gastric bypass is preferred and for those having BMI over 40, sleeve gastrectomy is the preferred weight loss option.

The surgeon differentiates between sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass surgery saying that gastric bypass is a mal absorptive procedure, while gastric sleeve is not. He considers sleeve gastrectomy safer than gastric bypass surgery due to low mortality and morbidity rate involved.

Along with India, Mexico is also known for the quality healthcare and affordable prices. Lap band, intra gastric balloon, duodenal switch, gastric bypass and gastric sleeve surgery in Mexico, is offered at low prices when compared to countries like US, UK and Australia.
