Gastric Sleeve Surgery Explained

  • It is a restrictive bariatric surgery.
  • It is also known as vertical sleeve gastrectomy, VSG, parietal gastrectomy, gastric sleeve resection, vertical gastroplasty and greater curvature gastrectomy.
  • The surgery involves cutting down the stomach to nearly 25% of its original size.
  • After removal of a major part of the stomach, the remaining stomach is stapled together rendering it a tube- or sleeve-like shape.
  • This “sleeved” stomach will fill up quickly on ingestion of tiny amounts of food.
  • Hence, you will feel sated after eating small quantities of food, which in turn will aid weight loss.
